ISO 216 recommendation of A4 size

Are you confused about A4 size paper? What is it, how is it different from other paper sizes, and what are its uses?

A4 size paper is a widely used paper format that has become a standard in many countries around the world. It offers a versatile and convenient option for various purposes, including printing, writing, and design.

In this article, we will explore the features and benefits of A4 size paper, its common uses in different settings, and provide tips for choosing the right paper for your needs.

What is the A4 paper size?

A4 size paper is a standardized paper format defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It measures 210 millimeters (mm) wide and 297 mm tall, with an aspect ratio of 1:√2.

The dimensions of A4 paper make it longer and narrower compared to the traditional Letter size paper commonly used in North America.

A4 size paper is the most popular size among the ISO-A series of paper sizes. It measures 210 mm x 297 mm or 8.27 inches x 11.69 inches. A4 size paper is specified by ISO-216:2007. The A4 paper size is mostly used by almost every country across the world, except in North America.

A Brief History of A4 Size Paper

The A4 paper size was first introduced in Germany in 1922. The German standard DIN 476 was adopted as an international standard in 1975, and A4 size paper became the standard paper size for most countries in the world.

What is the ISO 216: 2007?

ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. ISO is a non-governmental & independent international organization. An ISO certification for a product means that the product is complying with the international standard.

The international standard for paper sizes is ISO-216. The ISO-216:2007 is based on the German standard DIN 476 standard from 1922.

The ISO-216 specifies three series of paper sizes, the “ISO-A”, “ISO-B”, and “ISO-C” series of paper sizes. The ISO-A series includes the A4 paper size, the most popular paper size worldwide.

Dimensions of A4 size paper:

The relation between the dimensions of ISO-A paper size is √2: 1 (length: Width).  As the A4  paper size is an ISO- A size, hence the relation between dimensions of A4 size will be the same. The basic principles involved in arriving at the A4 sizes are:

  • In Portrait orientation relation between the dimensions – (Length : Width) = (1: √2)
  • In Landscape orientation relation between the dimensions – (Length : Width) = (√2 : 1).

A4 size in inches:

The dimension of A4 paper size in inch –

  • The dimensions of A4 paper in portrait orientation are 11.69 inches (height) X 8.27 inches (width) when measured in inches.
  • The dimensions of A4 paper in landscape orientation are 8.27 inches (height )  X 11.69 inches (width) when measured in inches.

A4 size in cm:

The dimension of A4 sheet size in cm –

  • The dimensions of A4 paper in portrait orientation are 29.7 cm (height) X 21.0 cm (width) when measured in cm.
  • The dimensions of A4 paper in landscape orientation are 21.0 cm (height )  X 29.7 cm (width) when measured in cm.

What is the weight of the A4 Sheet?

The weight of paper depends on the size of the paper and the thickness of the paper.

The size of the paper refers to the relation of paper size to A0 size. In other words, it refers to the area of the paper size in sq.m.

The weight of the paper is designated by its GSM (grams per sq. meter).

Example:

80 gsm A0 paper –

80 gsm paper means the weight of 1 sq. m of paper is 80 gm. Now as the area of A0 size paper is 1 sq.m (1189 mm x 841 mm). Hence the weight of the A0 paper is 80 grams.

160 gsm A4 paper

160 gsm paper indicates a paper of 1 sq.m weighs about 160 grams.

Now the area of A4 size paper is 0.0625 sq.m. Hence the weight of a 160 gsm A4 paper is = 160 x 0.0625 = 10 grams.

Again the area of A4 paper is 1/16 of the area of an A0 size. Hence the weight of a 160 gsm A4 paper is 160/16 = 10 grams.

A4 size paper is available in different weights and thicknesses, which determine its durability and suitability for specific tasks. The weight of the paper is measured in grams per square meter (gsm).

Common weights for A4 paper range from 60 gsm to 120 gsm, with heavier options offering better quality and durability.

Comparison of area of A4 size paper and other ISO-A paper sizes:

Relation between A0 and A4: The area of A4 size is 1/16 of the area of an A0 sheet size. The area of an A0 sheet is 1 sq.m. The area of an A4 Sheet is 0.0625sq.m.

Relation between A1 and A4: The area of an A1 sheet is 0.5 sq.m. So the area of A4 size is 1/8 of the area of A1 sheet size.

Relation between A2 and A4: The area of an A1 sheet is 0.25 sq.m. So the area of A4 size is 1/4 of the area of A2 sheet size.

Relation between A3 and A4: The area of an A3 sheet is 0.125 sq.m. So the area of A4 size is 1/2 of the area of A3 sheet size.

Relation between A4 and A5: The area of an A4 sheet is two times the area of A5 size.

What is the area of the A4 Sheet?

The area of an A0 size sheet is 1 sq.m.

Now as the size A4 is 1/16 of the A0 size, Hence the theoretical area of the A4 sheet is 1/16 sq.m or 0.0625 sq.m.

But the actual area is  297 mm X 210 mm = 62370 sq.mm or 0.06237 sq.m.

What is the A4 size in cm?

The size of the A4 sheet in cm is 21 cm x 29.7 cm in landscape orientation.

The size of the A4 sheet in cm is 29.7 cm x 21 cm in potrait orientation.

Which is bigger A3 or A4?

The dimension of A4 sheet is 297 mm (height) X 210 mm inch(width) and the dimension of A3 sheet is 420 mm (height) X 297 mm (width).

Again the area of the A4 sheet is 0.06237 sq.m and the area of the A3 sheet is 0.12474 sq.m.

Hence the A3 is bigger than A4.

Which is bigger A5 or A4?

The dimension of A4 sheet is 297 mm (height) X 210 mm inch(width) and the dimension of A5 sheet is 210 mm (height) X 148 mm (width).

Again the actual area of the A4 sheet is 0.06237sq.m and the actual area of the A5 sheet is 0.03108 sq.m.

Hence the A4 is bigger than A5.

What are B4 paper sizes?

B4 is a paper size in the ISO-B series as recommended by ISO:216. The size of B4 paper in mm is 353 mm x 250mm.

Basically, B4 size is the geometrical mean of A3 and A4 sizes.

B4 paper is used when we need a paper larger than A4 size but smaller than A3 size.

What are C4 paper sizes?

The C4 paper size is an ISO-C series paper size as recommended by ISO:216. The dimension of C4 paper is 324 mm x 229mm.

The C4 size is the geometrical mean of A4 and B4 sizes.

ISO-C is called envelope sizes. These are the size of the envelope within which an ISO-A paper of the same number will perfectly fit.

Example: An A4 paper will perfectly fit in a C4 size envelope.

Which is bigger A4 or B4?

The actual dimension of A4 paper is 297 mm x 210mm. hence the area of this size is  0.06237 sq.m.

The actual dimension of a B4 size paper is 353mm x 250 mm. So the area of this paper size is 0.08825 sq.m.

So The B4 size is bigger than the A4 size.

Is A4 paper size the same as legal and letter sizes?

The A4 paper size is 297 mm x 210mm.

The legal paper size is 216 mm x 356 mm.

The letter paper size is 216 mm x 279mm

Hence they are not the same.
